How to Use Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor to Rip SACDs

If you have a collection of Super Audio CDs (SACDs) and want to backup them to your computer or create a DSD disc, you need a tool that can bypass the copy protection and extract the audio tracks from the SACD disc. One such tool is Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor, a software that runs on a SACD compatible PlayStation 3 (PS3) console and allows you to rip SACDs to ISO files or individual tracks in DSDIFF (DFF) or DSF formats.

What is Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor?

Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor is a software that was developed by Mr Wicked and is hosted on GitHub[^1^]. It is based on the sacd-ripper project, which was originally written by sacd-ripper team. The software makes use of the PS3's ability to read SACD discs and bypass the Pit Signal Processing (PSP) copy protection. PSP is a technique that prevents conventional CD/DVD drives from reading SACD discs by introducing intentional errors in the data pits. However, the PS3 has a special optical drive that can read these errors and decode the audio data.

What do you need to use Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor?

To use Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor, you need the following:

  • A SACD compatible PS3 console. The first two generations of PS3 (CECHAxx and CECHBxx for NTSC regions, CECHCxx and CECHExx for PAL regions) are capable of reading SACD discs. You can check your PS3 model number on the back of the console.

  • A firmware version of 3.55 or lower on your PS3. This is because Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor requires you to run a custom firmware (CFW) on your PS3, which is only possible on firmware 3.55 or lower. If your PS3 has a higher firmware version, you cannot downgrade it or run CFW on it.

  • A USB flash drive or an external hard drive formatted in FAT32. You will need this to store the extracted ISO files or tracks.

  • A computer with a network connection. You will need this to download the Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor software and transfer it to your PS3.

  • A SACD disc that you want to rip.

How to use Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor?

Here are the steps to use Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor:

  1. Download the latest version of Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor from GitHub[^1^]. You will get a ZIP file containing two files: sacd_extract.exe and sacd_extract.pkg.

  2. Copy the sacd_extract.pkg file to the root directory of your USB flash drive or external hard drive.

  3. Connect your USB flash drive or external hard drive to your PS3.

  4. Install CFW on your PS3 if you haven't done so already. You can find various guides online on how to do this, but be careful as this may void your warranty and brick your console if done incorrectly.

  5. On your PS3, go to Game > Install Package Files and select sacd_extract.pkg. This will install the Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor software on your PS3.

  6. Insert your SACD disc into your PS3.

  7. Launch Scarletbook-SACD-Extractor from Game > sacd_extract.

  8. You will see a menu with various options. You can choose to rip the entire SACD disc to an ISO file, or extract individual tracks to DFF or DSF files. You can also select the output directory and network settings if you want to transfer the files over LAN or Wi-Fi.

  9. Press X to start ripping or extracting. The process may take several minutes depending on the size of your SACD disc and the speed of your USB flash drive or external hard drive.

  10. Once done, you will see a message saying "Done!". You can press O to exit the software.

  11. Eject your SACD disc from your PS3 and disconnect your USB flash drive or external hard drive from your PS3.

  12. Connect your USB
